Harry Lando, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. He received his Doctorate of Psychology from Stanford University. In 1999 he became Outreach Community Director for the Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center (TTURC) at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Lando is also a member of the University of Minnesota Cancer Center.

Dr. Lando's main areas of research interest are in global tobacco reduction issues, smoking intervention and public policy changes relevant to smoking.

He has been active in the field of smoking cessation since 1969. He has published extensively in this area and was a scientific editor of the 1988 Report of the Surgeon General, "The Health Consequences of Smoking: Nicotine Addiction."

Throughout his career, Dr. Lando has received many honors recognizing him the field of tobacco. He was awarded the Certificate of Appreciation, National Institute on Drug Abuse for "Exemplary contributions in the field of tobacco science and in the treatment of tobacco dependence" in 1986, the "Outstanding Contribution to the Extramural Research Programs of the National Cancer Institute," in 1987, the Public Health Service "Outstanding Service as Scientific Editor of the 1988 Report of the Surgeon General," and the Delta Omega Public Health Honorary, in 1994. More recently, Dr. Lando received the Lynn Smith Award for Excellence in Tobacco Control in 2001 and the Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco in 2005.

Dr. Lando received the 2006 University of Minnesota Award for Global Engagement for his international work in global tobacco reduction. This award carries with it the title of “Distinguished International Professor.”

Dr. Lando was a member of the tobacco cessation guidelines panel for the US Department of Health and Human Services. He is a member of the Center for Child Health Research Tobacco Consortium of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is Deputy Regional Editor of the journal Addiction and is past president of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco and current chair of the SRNT Global Network Committee.
